When Is a Sign Permit Required?
In Toronto, a sign permit is generally required for any new, altered, or replaced sign visible from a public street. This includes most storefront signs, channel letters, pylon signs, and illuminated displays. Window vinyl and certain temporary signs may be exempt, but rules vary by location and sign type.
Outside Toronto, municipalities including Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, and Richmond Hill have their own sign by-laws with different requirements for setbacks, height, area, and illumination.
What We Handle
BestSigns prepares all required drawings — including elevations, site plans, and structural details — and submits the permit application on your behalf. We track the application through the approval process and coordinate with the City or municipality to resolve any comments or revisions.
For properties in heritage districts or Business Improvement Areas (BIAs), we're familiar with the additional review steps required and will guide you through them. We've managed permit approvals for businesses on Queen Street West, Danforth, Yonge Street, King Street, and across the GTA.
